Braces

When braces are needed

Straightening teeth is not only about looks. Crowded teeth are harder to clean and hold more plaque, an incorrect bite can wear teeth unevenly or overload the jaw joint, and large gaps between teeth sometimes affect chewing and speech. Orthodontics corrects all of these situations — in children, teenagers and adults alike.

For children, an early orthodontic consultation — around the age of 7–8 — makes it possible to spot jaw growth problems while some of them can still be corrected more simply. That does not mean adults have missed their chance: teeth can be aligned at any age, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. If you are considering braces in Chisinau, the first step is a complete orthodontic evaluation.

Types of braces: brackets and alternatives

The best-known option remains fixed braces with brackets — the small pieces bonded to the teeth, connected by a wire that gradually guides tooth movement. Brackets can be metal, the most robust option, or ceramic, more discreet and tooth-colored. The choice depends on the complexity of your case, your age and your preferences.

For certain situations other solutions may also be suitable, from removable appliances used in children during growth to more discreet options for adults. There is no universally “best” appliance — there is the right appliance for your bite. At the orthodontic consultation we analyze the position of your teeth, your occlusion and, where necessary, X-rays, then present the realistic options for your case, with the advantages and limits of each.

How orthodontic treatment works at Bellodent

Treatment begins with an evaluation appointment: we examine your teeth and bite, discuss what bothers you and what result you want, and based on X-rays and impressions we set the treatment plan. From the start, we explain the estimated duration, the stages and what each visit involves.

After the braces are fitted, you come in for regular adjustments, usually every four to six weeks. In the first days after fitting or after each adjustment, some pressure or mild sensitivity is normal and passes within a few days. Hygiene becomes especially important: we teach you how to clean properly around the brackets. At the end of treatment, your aligned teeth are kept in place with a retainer — usually a discreet wire on the inside of the teeth or a night guard — so the result stays stable.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can you get braces?

A first orthodontic consultation is recommended around the age of 7–8, when some growth problems can be corrected more simply. Fixed braces with brackets are usually fitted after the permanent teeth erupt, in the teenage years. There is no upper age limit, though: teeth can be straightened in adulthood too, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. The right timing is decided at a consultation.

How long does treatment with braces take?

On average, orthodontic treatment takes between one year and two and a half years, depending on the complexity of the case: severe crowding or bite problems take longer than simple corrections. Keeping your adjustment appointments and following instructions shortens the journey. You receive a realistic estimate for your case at the orthodontic consultation, after the evaluation and X-rays.

Do braces hurt?

Fitting braces does not hurt. In the first days after fitting and after each adjustment, a feeling of pressure or sensitivity when chewing is normal and usually passes within three to five days. Brackets can slightly irritate the cheek at first — orthodontic wax helps. Most patients adapt quickly, and the discomfort does not interfere with daily activities.

How much do braces cost in Chisinau?

The cost depends on the type of braces chosen and the complexity of your case, which is why we do not publish general prices — a figure without an evaluation would only be a guess. At the orthodontic consultation we examine your teeth and bite, present the suitable options and set the exact cost of treatment, with all stages explained from the start.

What happens after the braces come off? Do teeth shift back?

Without a retainer, teeth naturally tend to drift back toward their original position. That is why, after the braces are removed, a retainer is fitted: a thin wire bonded to the inside of the front teeth, a night guard worn while sleeping, or both. Worn as instructed, the retainer maintains the result long term. The details are agreed with your dentist at the end of treatment.

Can I get braces if I have cavities or gum problems?

Braces are fitted only on healthy teeth and gums without active inflammation. Cavities are treated, and gingivitis or gum disease is stabilized before orthodontic treatment begins — otherwise the braces would make hygiene harder and worsen the existing problems. At the consultation we evaluate the whole picture and set the correct order of the stages.
