Crown, bridge or denture: what is the difference
A dental crown is a “cap” that completely covers a weakened tooth — for example one that has had a root canal or has been largely destroyed by decay — restoring its shape, strength and natural appearance. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by resting on the neighboring teeth, which are covered with crowns. A denture, removable or fixed, is the solution when several teeth or a whole arch are missing.
Each option has clear indications, advantages and limits: a bridge requires the neighboring teeth to be shaped, a removable denture needs an adjustment period, and the choice of material affects both the appearance and the durability. At Bellodent we calmly explain what suits your situation and why, without rushing your decision.
Why replacing missing teeth matters
A missing tooth can seem like a purely cosmetic problem, especially if it does not show when you smile. In reality, the empty space triggers a chain of changes over time: the neighboring teeth drift and tilt toward the gap, the tooth on the opposite arch moves down in search of contact, chewing shifts to one side, and the bone in the toothless area gradually resorbs.
The further these changes progress, the more complex the solutions become. That is why we recommend not postponing the replacement of a missing tooth for years. At the consultation we evaluate the position of the neighboring teeth, the quality of the bone and your bite, then present the realistic options — from a dental bridge to a denture — with the steps and duration of each, so you can choose with full knowledge.
How prosthetic treatment works at Bellodent
Prosthetic treatment proceeds in clear stages. We start with the evaluation and the plan: we examine your teeth and X-rays and discuss your expectations. Preparation follows — treating cavities or root canals where necessary and shaping the supporting teeth for crowns or bridges — then the impression, from which the dental laboratory crafts your restoration.
Until the final work is ready you usually wear a temporary version, so you are never left without teeth, not even for a day. At the try-in we check the shape, color and bite comfort together; we adjust whatever is needed before the final fitting. With removable dentures, the first weeks are a natural adjustment period, through which we guide you patiently. At the end you receive hygiene instructions specific to your restoration, and at regular check-ups we verify its stability over time.
Frequently asked questions
When do I need a dental crown instead of a filling?
A filling is enough when the tooth still has healthy walls to support it. When the damage is extensive — after deep decay or a root canal — a large filling risks fracturing together with the tooth. A dental crown covers and protects the whole tooth, redistributing chewing forces. Which option is right in your case is decided at a consultation, after an examination.
How long does a crown or dental bridge last?
A well-made and properly cared-for crown or bridge commonly lasts many years — often more than ten. The actual lifespan depends on daily hygiene, gum health, habits such as teeth grinding, and regular check-ups, at which we inspect the restoration. No restoration is truly “for life”, but proper maintenance visibly extends its lifespan.
Are removable dentures uncomfortable?
In the first weeks, a removable denture takes getting used to: it may feel bulky, saliva increases, and speaking and chewing adjust gradually. This is a normal stage that passes for most patients within two to four weeks. If sore spots appear, the denture is adjusted in the clinic — you are not meant to simply put up with it. At the consultation we also discuss stabilization options suited to your case.
Do teeth have to be shaped for a dental bridge?
Yes. A bridge rests on the teeth adjacent to the gap, which must be shaped and covered with crowns — that is the trade-off of the method. When the neighboring teeth are intact and healthy, the alternatives are worth discussing too, so they are not sacrificed unnecessarily. At the consultation we weigh the options together, with the advantages and limits of each for your situation.
How much does a crown or denture cost in Chisinau?
The cost depends on the type of restoration, the material chosen and the number of teeth involved, which is why we do not publish general prices. At the consultation we evaluate your situation, present the suitable options and set the exact cost of each stage, so you know from the start what the whole treatment involves — no surprises along the way.
